NSHD'S MEDICAL SHARPS COLLECTION PROGRAM

Community voices matter—we live well and thrive together!

We heard your feedback—and your input makes a difference. In response to community needs,
Starting Monday, November 3, 2025, NSHD will be a medical sharps collection site
to better serve the North Shore.

To safely dispose of your used needles, syringes, or other sharps:

  • Place them in a sturdy plastic container with a tight, puncture-resistant lid (like a detergent bottle or medical sharps container). When it’s ¾ full, seal it with duct tape and label it “DO NOT RECYCLE.”
  • Bring your sealed container to NSHD during office hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM). No appointment needed.
  • Never dispose of sharps in the trash, recycling, toilets, or medication drop boxes—it’s unsafe and illegal.

Additional Information

  • Sharps containers are available for purchase at NSHD
    • 2-gallon for $10
    • 0.25-gallon for $5
  • There is a $5 fee for processing outside containers (not purchased from NSHD).
  • Limit: One drop-off per household per month (up to 2 gallons).
  • Commercial or institutional waste will not be accepted.

Medication and Drug Disposal

Do you or someone you know have expired medications or drugs?
Proper disposal helps protect our environment and community. Never flush medications or throw them in the trash.

Safe disposal options include:
  • Drop-off at designated medication disposal boxes located at local police departments or pharmacies—many North Shore police departments are permanent disposal sites.
  • Participating in community drug take-back events (April and October).
  • Using mail-back programs or disposal kits available at some pharmacies.
  • Reach out to NSHD to see if we have any safe disposal products on hand.
  • Stop by the free vending machine at Glendale City Hall and see if there are any safe disposal items.
